Kerby's Story

Picture
Kerby was found in back of a local strip mall, emaciated, dirty, covered with fleas, crying, trying to find shelter and food, but whose right eye was ruptured and left eye so swollen and infected, he could not see to find his way. He was estimated to be between 3 and 4 weeks old when found.

A kind-hearted woman heard the crying and came to his rescue. She took him in and provided food and a warm bed, but did not have the financial resources to help Kerby’s medical needs and surrendered him to Happy Hearts Feline Sanctuary.

Upon acceptance into Happy Hearts, immediately made an appointment with our vet. The Vet determined that the eye was ruptured and could not be saved. The best thing for Kerby was to have it removed.

Blood work showed that Kerby had several other health challenges; he was anemic and having difficulty producing new, healthy red blood cells. His white blood cell count showed there was inflammation and his SDMA was high, but hopefully not a true kidney dysfunction. Because Kerby was in such poor health, healing of the right socket took a long time. His left eye was also slow to heal, requiring several visits back to the vet and there was concern that glaucoma was an issue and he could lose his left eye. Ketorolac was prescribed for his left eye until he could be seen by an opthamologist.

Later the Sanctary Manager noticed there was something wrong with Kerby’s right rear paw. Although he was walking on it, it was swollen and seemed to have something “caked” on it. It was an old injury, obviously overlooked because of the attention paid to his eyes. This surgery was performed to remove this injured toe.

Miraculously, the Ketorlac helped Kerby’s left eye. Pressure returned to normal and his eye did not have to be removed, although sight in it was severely affected, he likely only sees light/dark and shadows.

However, after the foot surgery, Kerby was finally showing signs of full recovery; gaining weight, developing a lovely coat of shiny fur, filling out and growing like a healthy kitten.
